FOR OPTIMUM USE OF AIRSPACE

Ahmedabad area control boundary is strategically located with Karachi to West and Delhi, Nagpur and Mumbai towards North, East and South respectively. It has become one of the busiest major ACCs today in India . A 474 and A347 connecting Delhi and Mumbai are the two busiest routes in India and these routes are being intersected by two very busy International routes in Ahmedabad TMA. Apart from this Ahmedabad TMA extends beyond the control zone of Udaipur, Vadodara, Indore, Bhavnagar. Domestic traffic to and fro from this Airfields criss-crosses different routes adding to the more conflicts in climb and descend phases of flight.

Roughly Ahmedabad area Ahmedabad being strategically located with Karachi to West with international control centre provide route radar service under its area of jurisdiction within the reliable coverage of radar measuring an area of 50,000 square nautical miles. Within the airspace as per the attached diagram all the flights are provided with direct routings as far as practicable, desired cruising flight levels, most desired flight profile and seamless Air Traffic Control service under Radar with the exception of some grey areas towards the North-East of Ahmedabad that lies beyond the radar coverage of both Delhi and Ahmedabad.

To improve safety and efficiency of our airspace and to provide more optimum use of desired flight levels by International and Domestic carrier some of the grey areas need to be improved upon which are -

1. Radar coverage towards north east direction of Ahmedabad and coverage of Delhi radar towards the south needs to be improved. This will help provision of seamless radar service from Delhi to Mumbai and may reduce present longitudinal separation of 10 min to 5 min at same flight level if desired by appropriate ATS authority and thus improve fuel efficiency which will add to our national economy.

2. The Restricted and Danger areas designated for Indian Military use have no doubt got its importance for security and safety of our country, but with proper coordination with Military authority those can be relocated if practicable to improve safety and more utilization of airspace in the Ahmedabad CTA. Impediments in Ahmedabad CTA are VAD-8, VAD-219 near Indoor. VAR-35 falls on the ATS route W10. VAD-26, VAD-27 falling well within the ATS route N 893, G 472, N895, G451 all of which are Internatioanl route and supposed to be free from restrictions for more flexibility.

3. Presently Rajkot, Jamnagar, Bhuj and Porbandar all lie within Mumbai FIC and Flight information service is being provided by Mumbai FIC beyond control zone of those Airfields. Ahmedabad being close to those Airfields and having RSR facility and coverage of Radar can be handed over those areas with proper sectorisation of our CTA so as to upgrade the airspace structure & improve safety and efficiency of the airspace.
